We are very proud to be officially the most unspoilt pub in the country !!

The full citation from The Good Pub Guide says, ‘Wonderfully unspoilt place - like stepping back in time; mullioned windows, 17th-c kitchen range with copper pots, old wall clock, rush-seated chairs and antique settles, beams hung with pewter mugs and shelves lined with embossed Doulton stoneware flagons, also a panelled Georgian room and, to the left of a small hatch-served lobby, a cosy beamed room with stripped settles, scrubbed tables and open fire under huge mantelbeam, Marstons, Thwaites and a guest, decent fair value food; cribbage and dominoes; well behaved children welcome, dogs in bar, benches in small front yard, garden with tables looking out over pastures, open all day Fri-Sun, closed Mon lunchtime.’

Classic Cars at The Gate

July 19, 2017

Delighted to host a classic car club for lunch today.

Vehicles included a futuristic yellow Piper from the 1970s; a vintage Sunbeam; a rhubarb + custard Riley, several Triumph TRs, an MGA and an Austin Healey 3000, all in pristine condition (see our gallery for more pictures).

At the foot of the Peaks, midway between Ashbourne and Matlock, fifteen miles north of Derby – with Chatsworth House, Dovedale and some of Britain’s best roads just a stone’s throw away – Ye Olde Gate Brassington is ideally situated for a pitstop during a driving day in the Peak District!

We also have onsite parking for up to fifteen cars and a Georgian wood panelled dining room for large groups.

The Times hails Gate chef 'genius'

7 February 2018

Crikey, even for our chef Phil Joy it’s not every day The Times calls you a genius…

Times columnist and Gate regular Matthew Parris visited on Sunday. Having previously braved our Beef Candle he decided to try chef’s latest invention, the Lamb Doughnut.

The result was the headline item on his Wednesday ‘My Week’ comment piece titled – incredibly - ‘Genius who invented the lamb doughnut’.

Needless to say we were all completely blown away!

Parris said, ‘A big doughnut lightly sprinkled with smoked paprika sugar appeared on a plate, with a little ramekin of apricot sauce for dipping. I plunged in the knife. At its centre was a moist pocket of diced and tender lamb, mint, cream, coriander, cream cheese and chilli. It was absolutely delicious.’

Well thank you Matthew, glad you enjoyed it!

Lamb Doughnut is available on select days as a starter special at £7.95. Please call ahead on 01629 540448 to make sure it’s on for your visit, or get in touch via our contact page.
